Description

Tiandy TC-P3S020-GIG 16-Port Gigabit PoE+ Switch

When a CCTV installation grows beyond a handful of network cameras, the switch needs to provide sufficient network connections, reliable PoE power and practical uplink options. The Tiandy TC-P3S020-GIG, corresponding to the TC-P3S020 Spec:G/1622/AT/180 configuration, brings these requirements together with 16 Gigabit PoE+ ports, a 180W total power budget and four additional Gigabit uplink interfaces.

Unlike 16-port switches limited to 100Mbps camera connections, all 16 PoE ports on this model support 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet. This makes it suitable for Gigabit-capable IP cameras and other compatible PoE network equipment, while its 40Gbps switching capacity and 29.76Mpps forwarding rate provide the internal switching performance for handling traffic across the available interfaces.

The switch supports IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at powered devices, with up to 30W available from an individual PoE+ port. However, the total output is limited to 180W across all PoE connections. For an installation with numerous cameras, the combined maximum power requirements must therefore be calculated rather than assuming that all 16 ports can simultaneously deliver 30W. The switch also supports automatic PoE priority, with port 1 taking precedence through to port 16.

Dedicated Gigabit Uplinks for Copper and Fibre Networks

In addition to its 16 powered Ethernet connections, the TC-P3S020-GIG provides two separate Gigabit RJ45 uplink ports and two Gigabit SFP slots. The RJ45 interfaces can connect the switch to an NVR, another network switch or the wider wired network, while the SFP interfaces provide the option of fibre-based network links using suitable transceivers and cabling.

This arrangement preserves the 16 PoE ports for powered devices instead of consuming camera connections for the main network uplink. Its store-and-forward switching architecture, automatic speed adaptation and LED status indicators support straightforward installation and fault identification.

Extended PoE Links with Automatic Watchdog Operation

For cameras positioned beyond a conventional Ethernet cable run, the switch includes a physical DIP-controlled Extend Mode. When activated, ports 9–16 operate at a fixed 10Mbps, with the manufacturer’s specified extended link distance reaching up to 220m under suitable cabling and equipment conditions.

Extend Mode also activates the PoE watchdog function for the relevant ports, supporting automatic recovery of connected PoE equipment when a connection becomes unresponsive. This can reduce the need to physically access the switch to restart a remote camera.

The extended range comes with an important trade-off: ports 9–16 no longer operate at Gigabit speed while Extend Mode is enabled. Installers should use normal mode when full Gigabit performance is required, and reserve extended operation for devices whose bandwidth requirements and cabling conditions allow it.

Power and Installation Considerations

The switch operates from an AC 100–240V, 50/60Hz mains supply and incorporates a 52V PoE power system. Its metal-style rectangular enclosure measures 320mm wide, 207mm deep and 44mm high, with a net weight of approximately 1.78kg. Allow sufficient ventilation around the enclosure, particularly in equipment cabinets carrying multiple powered devices.

Tiandy specifies an operating temperature range of -10°C to +50°C, together with 4kV common-mode Ethernet surge protection and electrostatic discharge protection. These protections help improve electrical resilience but do not replace appropriate earthing, surge protection or sound installation practices.

For installations requiring 16 Gigabit PoE connections, separate copper and fibre uplinks, and an extended-distance option for selected cameras, the TC-P3S020-GIG offers a practical combination of connectivity and PoE power distribution in one network switch.
