Tapo C660 KIT – 4K Solar-Powered Pan/Tilt Security Camera

Outdoor security cameras are often limited by where a power cable can be installed and how much of the property a fixed camera can see. The Tapo C660 KIT addresses both challenges by combining a rechargeable 4K security camera, a dedicated solar charging panel and motorised pan/tilt movement in one outdoor surveillance kit.

With its 8MP resolution, automatic subject tracking and intelligent detection, the C660 KIT is particularly useful for monitoring larger outdoor areas where activity may move across the scene. Instead of relying on a fixed viewing direction, the camera can rotate to follow detected movement, while its solar charging system helps reduce the need for manual battery recharging.

The C660 records at up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, providing four times the pixel count of conventional 1080p video. This additional detail is valuable when reviewing movement around entrances, parked vehicles, driveways and other outdoor areas.

Its 4 mm F1.6 lens provides a 105° diagonal field of view, while the motorised mechanism offers 360° horizontal viewing coverage. The camera can automatically identify and track people, pets and vehicles as they move through the monitored area.

An 18× digital zoom function allows closer examination of recorded or live images. Intelligent AI zoom can also help keep detected subjects in view. Because the zoom is digital rather than optical, enlarging an image does not increase the original captured resolution.

For locations requiring routine observation of several directions, the camera also offers scheduled scanning and patrol operation between selected viewpoints. Daily scanning and cruising time limits apply.

Solar Charging with a 10000 mAh Battery

The C660 KIT includes a Tapo A201 solar panel, designed to keep the camera’s built-in 10000 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery charged using available sunlight. The panel provides up to 2.5 W charging power and connects to the camera through its charging connection.

TP-Link specifies that approximately 45 minutes of direct sunlight can support a full day’s typical operation under defined test conditions, including up to 100 triggered events per day. This is a conditional performance figure rather than a guaranteed daily charging time.

For dependable operation, position the panel where it receives unobstructed direct sunlight and avoid shaded locations where possible. Actual charging and battery endurance depend on weather, temperature, detection activity, camera movement, recording behaviour and other operating conditions.

The camera and solar panel can be positioned separately using the included mounting accessories and extension wire, allowing the camera to face the required surveillance area while the panel is placed for better solar exposure.

Colour Night Vision and Active Deterrence

The camera uses a 1/2.7-inch Starlight CMOS sensor and a wide F1.6 aperture to improve image capture in low-light conditions. Two built-in spotlights support full-colour night vision, while 850 nm infrared illumination provides an alternative night viewing mode with a manufacturer-rated range of up to 12 m.

When configured to respond to relevant activity, the camera can activate its sound and light alarm. The alarm settings allow customisation, including spotlight brightness and recorded voice alerts.

A built-in microphone and speaker provide two-way audio communication through the Tapo app, making it possible to speak to visitors or delivery personnel without being physically present at the camera.

Flexible Recording and Smart Notifications

The C660 supports local video storage on a microSD card of up to 512 GB, allowing recordings to be retained without requiring a cloud storage subscription. A compatible microSD card must be purchased separately.

TP-Link also provides an optional Tapo Care subscription for cloud recording, enhanced notifications and additional cloud-based services. Standard camera functions and supported local recording do not require a Tapo Care subscription.

Motion, person, pet and vehicle recognition help distinguish different types of activity. Custom activity zones can be configured to concentrate notifications on important areas, reducing unnecessary alerts from less relevant parts of the scene.

The camera also supports Tapo’s Always-On Video (AOV) continuous-capture technology, designed to record at a reduced frame rate during inactive periods and switch to normal recording when activity occurs. Availability of this feature depends on the applicable camera software and firmware.

Dual-Band Wi-Fi and Outdoor Installation

Unlike battery cameras limited to 2.4 GHz networking, the C660 supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The 5 GHz band can provide additional bandwidth for high-resolution live viewing where signal strength is sufficient, while 2.4 GHz generally offers better reach through obstacles.

Both the camera and the Tapo A201 solar panel have IP65-rated housings for outdoor use. The system supports wall or ceiling mounting and operates in ambient temperatures from -20°C to 45°C, although battery charging is specified for temperatures between 0°C and 45°C.

The camera is managed through the Tapo app and also supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration for compatible smart-home viewing arrangements.
